Black Cultural Archives x Transport for London Project Direction & Communications — Black History Tube Map
Some projects leave something behind. This one is still in print.
As Head of Marketing and Communications at Black Cultural Archives, TGRG led the development of a Black History edition of the London Underground map in partnership with Transport for London — a reimagining of one of the world’s most recognisable design icons as a tool for cultural storytelling and historical recognition.
We managed the full project internally at BCA, overseeing relationships with TFL, London Transport Museum and the commissioned historian responsible for curating names and placements across the map. We directed production timelines, navigated the sensitivities of historical representation, ensured alignment with BCA’s mission and voice, and supported the early communications strategy for how the map would be introduced to the public and integrated into BCA’s product catalogue.
The project was delivered to final production before our time at BCA concluded. The public launch, held at BCA and attended by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, brought immediate visibility and cultural weight to the work.
The Black History Tube Map is now a permanent item in BCA’s catalogue, used in education, programming and commercial sales. It is both a physical artefact and a lasting piece of cultural infrastructure.
“I am really proud that we’re able to launch Britain’s first-ever Black history Tube map, which celebrates the huge contribution Black Londoners have made, and continue to make, to our great city.” — Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London
